Rome – The Eternal City

Rome evolved from a small settlement into a continuously inhabited cultural and political center, blending ancient legacy with modern life.

Researchers have uncovered a massive burial site in southern France, in what is now Marseille. The recent archaeological discovery points to a very special burial ritual from ancient times.

Recent Archaeological Discovery: More Than 160 Graves Discovered

The site where the recent archaeological discovery was made is ancient Olbia. During the reign of Julius Caesar, the city was captured and served as a trading post for the Romans. Therefore, it is not surprising that researchers, led by Patrick Digelmann (Conseil Départemental du Var), made a find there in the form of a massive burial site.

The project was led by Inrap (Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives). In a statement, the institute explains that over 160 graves were recovered during the excavations. What is especially striking is the type of burials documented – the practice of cremation.

Cremation and Grave Goods

Cremation is considered the only documented burial ceremony for Olbia. The body of the deceased was burned on a pyre over a square pit. The fire turned the pit walls red, and the bones did not burn completely but became white and fractured. Researchers found these during the excavation.

According to Inrap, the Romans also placed personal items such as perfume bottles and pottery, as well as liquid offerings like wine and beer, in the graves “to honor the deceased.” An homage to the gods, intended to ensure the protection of the dead, is also conceivable. Therefore, these objects were also found in the recent archaeological discovery.
